At the close of this historic coronation weekend, there will be much for the royal family as well as the nation to consider.

The majesty and mystery of the Westminster Abbey ceremony, alongside Prince William’s reference to the late queen’s pride at her son, are a perfect example of an institution that has so often looked back rather than evolving for the future.

William tonight rightly celebrated his father, the new King, as a pioneer of causes including the environment and young people.

Having finally taken the role he waited nearly his whole life for, Charles must immediately activate this same revolutionary approach if he is to cement his legacy, before it is too late.

A growing Republican sentiment at home as well as overseas, questions over the institution’s handling of recent family drama and increasing apathy among the younger generation, it is all to do.

Charles’ path will be a smoother ride if he enlists the help of his heir, William and his family.

Arguably the complete stars of the show, William and Kate can show that the most archaic of organisations can learn lessons of the past, can change and can evolve.

Honesty and integrity must be at the heart of this new era, for if that fails, the monarchy might end up more slimmed down than Charles had ever envisaged.
