Sea of Thieves' latest treat for players is a mystery, which will task players to solve puzzles both in real life and inside the game for the chance to win some real world prizes.

Sea of Thieves has been no stranger to mysteries, with the latest one kicking off next week on Thursday, May 11 and rewarding the winner with a one-of-a-kind replica of the game's Gold Hoarder skull. And runners-up will also be in for some treats.

Since the Xbox exclusive title launched in 2018 players have been sailing the high seas in search of loot, treasure and all other manner piratey things – even crossing over with Pirates of the Caribbean and Monkey Island at one point. However, the developers at Rare like to take the idea of a nautical treasure hunt one step further.

At the game's launch, players had the chance to win gold bananas values at £80k, with limited edition engraved golden doubloons for runners-up. The studio took things one step further last year introducing the game's first Mystery, which are season-spanning narratives in which the Sea of Thieves community team up to solve them.

Last years mystery revolved around solving the murder of DeMarco Singh and included both in-game and social media clues. This years Sea of Thieves hunt will take players to even more chilling depths – scouring the internet. As explained on the official blog post, players will have to find clues scattered outside of the game that could be as devious as a single pixel in an image.
