Jurgen Klopp has stayed tight-lipped on Liverpool ’s potential swoop for Alexis Mac Allister despite Brighton seemingly opening the door to a move.

The Reds need some serious investment in the heart of the pitch ahead of next season as the German attempts to rebuild his squad at Anfield. The Argentine playmaker has been rumoured to be under consideration.

Liverpool have reportedly prioritised a swoop for Mac Allister following his starring role in Brighton’s European push, whilst he also played a key role in Argentina’s World Cup success in Qatar before the turn of the year. Amid those rumours, Klopp was asked for his thoughts on the midfielder during his press conference ahead of this weekend’s clash with Brentford.

The German has remained guarded though as he gave a short response. He said: “Nothing to say on it.”

Klopp’s comments come after an intriguing admission from Brighton CEO Paul Barber. Speaking ahead of the Seagulls late, dramatic victory over Manchester United on Thursday evening, he admitted that they could be open to selling Mac Allister.

"There are always going to be rumours when we do well and our people do well," Barber told Sky Sports. "There will always be bigger clubs playing at a higher level, looking to take our best people.

"All we can do is perform at our highest potential and we are confident we can keep our best people here for as long as possible. Nothing is guaranteed in football but we will certainly work hard to keep them here.

"We know it will happen [teams coming in for players] so we have to prepare the best we can in advance. We try to look at where we are possibly most vulnerable for outgoings. We try to create the best environment we can for our players. so they want to stay here. Hopefully they will see that staying here is better for their careers than not."

"Every club is a selling club to some extent. Even the biggest clubs get tempted by huge offers," Barber continued. "Our challenge, when we lose players, is to have players already in the door or to have some coming in immediately after them. We will continue recruiting as we have done and keep building for the future."

Mac Allister’s winning goal against United is just the latest in a long line of memorable contributions from the midfielder this term. He is currently in the midst of the most productive campaign with 11 goals and two assists to his name in all competitions.

Mac Allister has just over two years remaining on his contract with Brighton and it has been suggested that the Seagulls would be willing to accept around £60m for his services.
