A 33-year-old man was shot dead in a car park after a fight allegedly broke out over a dispute about charging their electric vehicles, police have said.

The tragic shooting happened at the Edgewater Public Market in the Denver area of Colorado, at around 9.40am on Wednesday.

It is alleged that two Tesla drivers who were at the parking station got into an argument and one of them, a Denver resident, was shot.

Following the incident, he was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead, Jefferson County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Jenny Fulton said.

The alleged shooter, a 38-year-old man, initially fled the scene before calling 911 to report the incident - and has since been detained.

Ms Fulton told local media: "I understand there was an altercation that occurred in the Tesla charging station area in this parking lot and that evidently led to the shooting, which is now unfortunately a homicide."

There are contrasting reports about the motive of the shooting - and investigators are still piecing together what the fight was about.

Images from the scene show that the Supercharger station appeared to be full, with all stalls in use.

EPD Sergeant Bob Brink said he does not think the victim, who was also armed, and the suspect knew each other.

The victim's identity will be released by the Jefferson County Coroner's Office once his family has been informed.

Police said there is currently no threat to the public. No charges have been announced yet and an investigation is ongoing.
