A man was choked to death on a train after threatening other passengers, police have said.

The 30-year-old allegedly began erratically and making threats on the F train in New York City, US, on Monday afternoon.

Another passenger stepped in and put the man in a headlock just before 2.30pm.

The restrained man lost consciousness and later died.

EMS rushed to the scene at the Broadway–Lafayette Street/Bleecker Street station but were unable to save him.

Pictures taken at the scene show paramedics working on the man as he lay on the floor of the train.

Police later set up a cordon around the area.

A 24-year-old was arrested but it is unclear if he will face charges.

Mirror Online have contacted the New York Police Department for more information

According to the New York Post the man who died had a number of prior arrests including for assault, disorderly conduct, and fare beating.

Choke holds compress the neck so that blood flow to the brain slows and the brain doesn't have enough oxygen.

This can lead to unconsciousness, brain damage and even death.
