Wham! hit Careless Whisper has been voted the nation’s favourite song for an incredible fifth year.

The 1984 track, written by the late George Michael and pop partner Andrew Ridgeley, triumphed in Smooth Radio’s All Time Top 500, an annual list of the UK’s best-loved songs.

Michael, who died on Christmas Day in 2016 aged 53, was also crowned most popular artist, with 20 songs making the list.

In a joint statement, George Michael Entertainment and his family said to those who voted: “Five years in a row at number one! What can we say? George would be so delighted”.

Sir Elton John was second most popular artist, with 14 songs in the top 500 including Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me, a collaboration with Michael. Whitney Houston, who died in 2012 aged 48, was named most popular female artist with 12 songs.

Earlier this month, the Mirror reported that ITV chiefs are planning a three hour tribute to George Michael, celebrating what would have been his sixtieth.

Insiders say the June TV special will be the biggest celebration of his life and legacy to date.

Among those expected to contribute are Andrew Ridgeley and backing singer Shirlie Kemp – along with her husband Martin as well as former Spice Girl Geri Horner and singer Liam Gallagher, who were both close pals with George. Years & Years star Olly Alexander is also likely to take part in the wide-ranging tribute.

A source said: “It will be a joyous coming together of all George’s friends and loved ones to highlight his incredible legacy.”
