Redfall supports up to four-player co-op but do you need buy it on the same platform as your friends?

Redfall is a co-op FPS from Arkane Studios that sees you take on a legion of vampires with up to three friends – but can you squad up if you're on different platforms?

The Redfall release date is almost upon us, with the game launching next week on Tuesday, May 2. The four-player co-op shooter has caused quite the furore in terms of its console release, with the title being capped at 30fps in Quality mode. So you may be rethinking which platform to pick it up on, and whether or not you'll be able to play with friends based on that decision.

Let's rip the band-aid off right out of the gate: you can't play Redfall on PS4 or PS5. While it was initially set to release on PlayStation consoles, after Microsoft acquired Bethesda, that prospect went right out of the window. Our own Aaron Potter has lots to say on the Redfall PS5 treatment by Xbox, but suffice to say when it comes to consoles. Redfall is an Xbox exclusive. On the plus side, Redfall is a day one Xbox Game Pass release, but you can buy it as a standalone if you're not a subscriber, or want to pick up the Redfall Bite Back Edition.

With that out of the way, is let's dive into whether or not there's Redfall crossplay between Xbox and PC?

Does Redfall have crossplay?

Yes, Redfall supports crossplay between PC and Xbox consoles. The game is releasing for Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and PC so you can pick it up for those platforms and get your slaying on with friends. It doesn't end there! Redfall crossplay also extends to Steam and the Epic Games clients, as confirmed on the official Twitter account.

So whether you're playing Redfall on Xbox, PC, Steam, Epic Games Store, or Xbox Game Pass, you can play with friends who own the game on any of those platforms.

It's worth noting that the Xbox One and Xbox One X aren't listed as supported platforms for the game. However it is available to play via Xbox Cloud Gaming so if you're yet to make the leap to the current generation of consoles, you can still play via the cloud as long as you have a decent enough internet connection.

Of course, you don't have to play Redfall in co-op. You can take on the vampire scourge solo with Arkane stressing in a blog post that "a huge emphasis for Redfall has been the solo experience, in keeping with Arkane’s passions." So you won't be missing out on any content if you opt for the lone wolf route.
