Next week will see the return of Destiny 2’s annual Guardian Games event, with Hunters, Warlocks and Titans going head-to-head in competitive challenges.

Yes, if you can quite believe it, it’s almost that time of year again. You know the one, the time when every Hunter, Warlock and Titan in Destiny 2 compete in a series of Olympics-inspired challenges known as the Guardian Games. It all kicks off on PlayStation, Xbox and PC next week, at which point players will have the chance to win and gain access to all sorts of exclusive rewards.

Destiny 2 Guardian Games 2023 edition will mark the third time developer Bungie has held the limited-time event, after first introducing it back in 2020. Much like previous years, the Guardian Games sees all three classes duke it out, trying to complete in activities, online matches and bounties in order to gain more points than the other two opposing character types. If you’re wondering what’s new in this year’s Destiny 2 Guardian Games, we’ve got you covered.

Destiny 2 Guardian Games: release date

Bungie confirmed in a blog post that the Destiny 2 Guardian Games will return next week on Tuesday, May 2. The limited-time event will then last for a total of three weeks, ending alongside the rest of Season 20 on Tuesday, May 23. That means Hunters, Warlocks and Titans will have plenty of time to get stuck in and represent their class.

Destiny 2 Guardian Games: start time

The Destiny 2 Guardian Games start time hasn’t been explicitly stated by Bungie, indicating that the team still doesn’t quite know yet or is leaving itself a little bit of wiggle room to keep the expectations of players in check. However, the Guardian Games will most likely arrive at the same time as the weekly reset, which is typically 5pm UTC which translates to 6pm BST / 1pm EDT / 10am PDT. Expect it all to kick off roughly around then.

Destiny 2 Guardian Games: rewards

Of course, what good is taking part in the Destiny 2 Guardian Games if there isn’t a juicy carrot on the end of that stick? Fortunately, Bungie has outlined exactly what each class will be playing for over the course of the three weeks. To keep things clear, just like previous years, all three classes will be gifted an event card that works similarly to a battle pass, which you can choose to complete or not.

Here’s the full list of Destiny 2 Guardian Games rewards for 2023:

  • Taraxippos – scout rifle
  • Hunter’s Aspiring Challenger – Hunter armour set ornaments
  • Warlock’s Resolute Champion – Warlock armour set ornaments
  • Titan’s Enduring Conqueror – Titan armour set ornaments
  • Serpent’s Glory Mantle – Hunter cloak class item
  • Phoenix’s Ascent Bond – Warlock bond class item
  • Lion’s Reign Mark – Titan mark class item

On top of these, every Hunter, Titan and Warlock will be able to pay to unlock bonus rewards, such as a limited-edition Sparrow vehicle, Ghost Shell and a new exotic emote.

Destiny 2 Guardian Games: challenges

The good news about the Destiny 2 Guardian Games is that a lot of the activities players already indulge in will contribute towards points for their class. You’ll know this because upon completion you’ll score points that will earn you medallions, which can then be traded into your character class’ relevant NPC leader at the Tower. You can acquire medallions of four different values: bronze, silver, gold and platinum.

Here's a list of the objectives that will earn you medallions, and how much each is worth:

  • Bronze and silver medallions – Gambit and Quickplay matches played in Crucible
  • Gold and Platinum medallions – Raids, Nightfalls, Dungeons, Competitive Crucible matches, Trials of Osiris and Legend Defiant Battlegrounds.

Depositing these medallions in the Tower will contribute to the overall score of your class. These will then also contribute to what’s known as the Destiny 2 Guardian Games Cup, where players compete in a Technical and Charitable that doesn’t track your performance but number of medallions deposited. The winning team in each category will be rewarded with custom fireteam artwork.
