One person has been killed in an active shooter incident at a university campus as students were warned to "shelter in place".

A statement from Rose State College read: "We are currently experiencing an active shooter situation on campus. Please shelter in place and follow instructions from law enforcement officials.

"The shooter is in custody and police are on scene."

Rose State College is a university in suburban Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, which has about 13,000 students.

The husband of a witness said: "My wife said she heard shots and screaming, so not a drill."

Midwest City Police Chief Sid Porter said the shooting on the campus of Rose State College appeared to be “domestic-related.” He told reporters at the scene that both the suspect and victim were male.

He did not provide additional details about what led to the shooting.

Porter said that weeks before the shooting, students and staff at Rose State College had completed an exercise about what to do in the event of an active shooter.

“Thing got locked down real quick,” Porter said. “I just think they did a fantastic job listening to the school and everybody staying down and not panicking because we didn’t know what was going on.”

A student told reporters he heard six shots as he was walking into class.

It read: "We understand that many of you may have questions about the ongoing situation on campus. We ask that you please refrain from speculation and follow the instructions of law enforcement officials.

"We will provide updates as soon as we can."

A police cordon was set up around the scene which was swarming with emergency service personnel.

Reports suggest off-duty Midwest City police officers confronted the shooter shorty after the fatal shooting.

Police Chief Sid Porter described the incident as a domestic issue between the shooter and the victim. Both knew each other.
