Fernando Alonso has responded to light-hearted rumours that he is dating pop star Taylor Swift in cryptic fashion.

Rumours spread quickly on social media over the weekend following an anonymous comment suggesting the Formula 1 driver and American pop star were dating. It follows Swift's recent split with ex-boyfriend Joe Alwyn.

Alonso, who has clearly seen the rumours circulating, responded with a cheeky post on TikTok which excited fans. With Taylor's song 'Karma' playing over the top of the footage, the Spaniard is seen looking at his phone while sat in a chair, before looking up to the camera and simply winking.

In the caption, he simply wrote: "Race week era." The terms is a reference to the Eras Tour which Swift is currently on, following the release of her latest album Midnights late last year.

The use of the song 'Karma' may be coincidental due to the fact he used the term in a radio message to Renault teammate Jolyon Palmer, after his retirement in the Italian Grand Prix in 2017.

But it inevitably sparked further speculation on social media with 'Swifties' – die-hard fans of the world famous singer – suggesting numerous possible scenarios of how this could have happened.

Earlier this month, both Alonso and Swift split with their long-term partners. The singer's six-year relationship with British actor Joe Alwyn ended at around the same time it was announced that the racer and TV presenter Andrea Schlager had ended things.

The timing of those splits will no doubt be the main driver behind the dating rumours. There have, however, been some other coincidences – such as Alonso's self-description as F1's "anti-hero" in the latest season of Drive to Survive, which also happens to be one of Swift's newest singles.
