The fact lifelong Tory supporter Sir Rod Stewart is calling for Labour to be put back into Government will come as a blow to Rishi Sunak’s Conservatives and a bonus for Keir Starmer.

Because the rocker’s forthright comments reflect the mood of a nation sick of what the Tories are doing to our precious health service.

Record waiting lists and ambulance waits plus strikes by nurses and doctors are symptoms of terrible mistreatment of arguably the most cherished, vital key service of them all.

Former Commons Speaker and Tory MP John Bercow expressing support for the strikers is also evidence of a wider sea change because he admits the industrial action of 1979’s so-called Winter of Discontent made him a Conservative in the first place.

Striking nurses and doctors enjoy huge public support because voters know the Conservatives are responsible for the state of the NHS. Sir Rod speaks for us all.

Get them out

Evacuating British diplomats from civil war-ravaged Sudan and leaving other terrified Britons behind is a job half done.

The Foreign Office and Ministry of Defence must attempt to lead our civilians to safety, not abandon them to the mercy of a power struggle between the country’s regular army and a rebel paramilitary force.

We applaud the professionalism and bravery of British forces on the ground, yet the worry is that UK nationals sheltering in homes and compounds are still in mortal danger.

Nobody pretends that rescuing Britons will be easy but we must try.

Pitch perfect

Wrexham living the Hollywood dream is a feelgood renaissance a film director might shy away from because they’d fear nobody would believe it.

But reality is better than fiction as actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney break new ground as the only popular US owners of a British football club.
