Danny Rose has taken the opportunity to mock Tottenham by questioning how he's not playing for a club after they conceded five in the first-half at Newcastle.

The north Londoners endured a horrid opening 45 minutes at St James' Park with their season seemingly going from bad to worse. Newcastle were 5-0 up at the interval, with all their goals coming in the opening 21 minutes as the Magpies ran through their makeshift defence.

Tottenham, who need a win to boost their top four hopes, reverted to a back four, with Ivan Perisic at left-back. Rose previously shone in that position at Tottenham before he was ushered out of the club. He remains without an employer - but questioned how after seeing Tottenham defend.

He said on Sky Sports : "Jamie [Redknapp] told me you have to have the right personnel to play a back four so I was wrong there. There’s been so many mistakes and all I’ve been thinking all first half is how am I unemployed? To be five nil down after 20 minutes is unheard of for a club that are supposedly a massive club."

The 32-year-old, who also has 29 caps for England, spent a brief period at loan at Newcastle. Watford was Rose's last club, but his contract at Vicarage Road was terminated by mutual consent in September last year.

Kieron Dyer, who previously played for Newcastle, said on the opening 45 minutes: "I’m in disbelief. I thought Newcastle would win the game but to be five nil up after half an hour was just incredible. There was a lot made about Conte when he came out about his own players - about the Spurs players - and this is why he gave the outburst.

"Everything that he said in that press conference has come true. Spurs, the players, they cost the managers their jobs, they’re that bad. We touched on the full-backs being a problem, the centre halves have been poor, the midfielders have been poor, I think Skipp’s the only one who’s really tried and they’ve been put to sword."

Tottenham would find themselves six points off the top four with a defeat having also played more games than both Newcastle and Manchester United. Cristian Stellini remains in charge until the end of the campaign - a decision that did cop criticism.

His pre-match thoughts have not aged well after he underlined the belief within the squad. He said: “It’s in our hands. Of course, we have to try to beat our opponents, because we are behind them, but we believe... we believe that we cans reach this type of target."
