After a year of waiting, the Elden Ring DLC has finally been announced, and fans are already speculating what’s to come for the Lands Between.

The Elden Ring DLC was announced in February with a single piece of artwork accompanying the news that, nonetheless, saw speculation running wild. All FromSoftware revealed was a title – Shadow of the Erdtree – and a piece of promo art along with the announcement that the Elden Ring DLC is in development.

And yet, there's already countless Reddit threads theorising about what’s to come for the expansion in terms of story, new content, additions to the map and even possible time travel elements. We’ve compiled everything we know so far about the Elden Ring DLC as well as some of the more interesting fan theories.

Elden Ring DLC: release date

All FromSoftware had to say about the Elden Ring DLC was that it is “currently in development”. Past games in the Souls series (including Bloodborne) have generally been released within a year of the base game, but Elden Ring is a different beast entirely. For a game that is so huge it’s no shock that the DLC will take longer to cook up.

FromSoftware is also set to release Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon in 2023. A rumour from Exputer says that the game has a planned release window of September or October and that “the plan is to get the game out before the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion”. So we could be waiting until at least November, 2023 for the Elden Ring DLC to drop.

Elden Ring itself took a far longer time than previous Souls games, so in my eyes FromSoftware can take as long as it wants if the DLC ends up anywhere near the quality of the base game.

Elden Ring DLC: story theories

We only have the name of the Elden Ring DLC – Shadow of the Erdtree – and a single piece of art to go off. But, as always, the FromSoftware geniuses over at Fextraife are on the ball. The figure in the artwork is riding Torrent, who is the player's mount in the Elden Ring. When you get Torrent, you receive a bell that belonged to Torrent's original owner. People are speculating that this figure is the original owner.

Not only that, but there is rampant speculation that the figure on Torrent is none other than Miquella – a character who, outside of the opening, only appears in a slumber trapped in a cocoon form during the fight with Mohg, Lord of Blood. Still, Miquella is extremely important to the world; he is the brother of Malenia, and both siblings are cursed. –, Malenia with Rot, and Miquella is cursed to be forever young.

It’s also speculated that the Elden Ring DLC will take place before the events of the base game, due to the art not showing breaks or destruction seen in the Lands Between in the finale of Elden Ring. It’s worth noting that Dark Souls and Bloodborne’s DLC expansions also took place before the events of their respective games, so it wouldn’t be a departure from FromSoftware.

We'll have to wait for more crumbs from the developer, or a few more eagle-eyed redditors to unearth more clues, but for now, the teaser is giving little away.
