R Kelly appeals federal sex crimes case as lawyer slams 'farce' prosecution

R Kelly has filed an appeal in his federal sex crimes case.

The singer was found guilty on nine federal counts that included RICO charges as well as charges pertaining to sex crimes and human trafficking.

Appearing in court, the singer, real name Robert, has appealed for his conviction to be reversed.

According to legal documents obtained by TMZ, his legal team has argued that the government did not meet its burden of proof in court despite a jury convicting him on all counts.

They have specific gripes about the jury and some of the evidence prosecutors were allowed to submit during the trial.

His lawyer exclusively told the Mirror that he believes Rober's trial attorneys were "buffoons" and that the entire prosecution was "a farce"

"I think the entire prosecution was a farce, a bastardization of the RICO statute," he said.

"His trial attorneys were buffoons, only interested in self-promotion and ill-equipped, both legally and skill-wise, to handle the case. Regardless of what the uninformed public thinks, this case should have never been brought," he concluded.

Robert's attorneys have reportedly said that at least four of the jurors selected have since admitted that they prejudged his guilt before handing over the official verdict.

They also claim that two of the jurors had said that they watched the Surviving R Kelly docuseries, aired by Netflix in 2019, and therefore should never have been seated on the jury.

Robert has also claimed that the underage girls he allegedly groomed and molested were at least 18 years old when they met and engaged in sexual relationships, despite the prosecutors insisting that the alleged grooming started while they were minors.

His team believe that in the cases where the girls were in fact minors, the singer was misled to believe that they were older.

Robert was sentenced to 30 years in prison as well as 20 years for his Chicago federal sex crimes case, which he was sentenced to earlier this year.
