A police officer charged with rape while on duty has appeared in court for the first time.

Sergeant David Stansbury is charged with three counts of raping a woman on October 23 and November 30, 2009.

The 42-year-old, from Ilminster, Somerset, attended Bristol Magistrates' Court this afternoon.

He spoke only to confirm his name and date of birth before stating his address.

He was wearing a charcoal suit with a royal blue tie and white shirt.

Outside court, he was snapped in a face mask and sunglasses.

The charges relate to alleged incidents in Plymouth, and have been under investigation since being reported to the Devon & Cornwall Police in September 2020.

PS Stansbury is now a serving officer with Hertfordshire Police, having served with Devon & Cornwall Police from 2009-2011.

He is currently suspended from duty.

Stansbury was released on unconditional bail to appear at Bristol Crown Court on May 10.

He was told by the chair of the bench: "I would advise you to keep in touch with your lawyers in the meantime because there should be statements coming through...and you need to discuss them before your hearing."

These included a statement from the complainant's son, the court heard.

She warned the defendant he could be arrested if he failed to answer his bail.
