Wrexham welcome more Hollywood A-listers as Ryan Reynolds misses out on fun

Rob McElhenney's 'It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia' co-stars joined the Wrexham co-owner on Tuesday night as the non-league side moved one step closer to promotion.

McElhenney joined fellow actor Ryan Reynolds in launching a takeover bid for the Welsh club in 2021. After they narrowly missed out on promotion last season, the Red Dragons are now just one win away from returning to the Football League for the first time since 2008.

The actor's wife and co-star Kaitlin Olson joined McElhenney at the Racecourse Ground for Tuesday's victory over Yeovil which left Wrexham needing just one more win to seal promotion. Glenn Howerton and Charlie Day, who play Dennis and Charlie in 'It's Always Sunny...', also made it along, though Reynolds missed out.

The actors are by no means the first big-name stars to take in a Wrexham game this season. Reynolds' wife Blake Lively has joined him for games, while Will Ferrell and David Beckham were in attendance at the 2022 FA Trophy final.

Anchorman star Ferrell has been back this season as well, even drinking with fans at a local pub before one match. He took in a National League game against Wealdstone, and praised the work the new owners have done since arriving at the club.

“Ryan and Rob have done it so well," Ferrell told The Athletic in February. "Making sure they connected with the community, making sure they listened to the community.”

After beating Notts County in a dramatic top-of-the table clash on Easter Monday, Wrexham had their fate in their own hands. However, dropped points against Barnet had prompted some nerves going into Tuesday's meeting with Yeovil.

The visitors are fighting for their lives, and went into the game sitting in the relegation zone. The huge gulf between the teams didn't show, though, with the scores level at half-time.

Eventually, though, Wrexham broke down Yeovil's resistance. Second-half efforts from Anthony Forde, James Jones and Paul Mullin gave them all three points, meaning victory over Boreham Wood on Saturday would see them promoted with a game to spare.

One of the heroes of Wrexham's promotion push has been goalkeeper Ben Foster, who came out of retirement to sign a short-term deal with the club. Foster's last-minute penalty save earned the team that crucial win against Notts County, and the former Manchester United man revealed the owners have put the champagne on ice until promotion is secured.

"No, they didn't!" Foster told CBS Sports when asked if the owners threw the squad a party after the Notts County game. "They've promised us a big deal, though, at the end of the season.

"They've promised us a monster one at the end of the season. If we get promoted, they're gonna take us away somewhere with a lot of flashing lights."
