Nationwide Building Society is now paying customers 5% cashback on their supermarket shops.

The cashback is capped at £10 each month, per card, and applies against both in-person and online spends.

To get the maximum £10 cashback, customers would need to spend £200 a month.

Nationwide kicked off the offer this week and it will run until April 30 or once £99million has been paid out.

It is available on all adult current accounts, including FlexPlus, FlexDirect, FlexAccount, FlexStudent, FlexGraduate and FlexBasic, with the cashback paid automatically.

Sadly, the deal is not available on the FlexOne youth account, or petrol and diesel spends at supermarket fuel stations.

Tom Riley, director of retail products at Nationwide Building Society, said: “Food costs have risen sharply and many households now think carefully about how and where they shop.

“We're helping members with £10 a month cashback on supermarket spending – just one of the benefits of having a current account with the world's biggest building society.”

Other bank cashback deals

Santander Edge offers customers the chance to get up to £20 back in cashback each month - but there are a couple of catches.

The account comes with a £3 monthly fee - taking the cashback down to £17 effectively.

To get the cashback, you also have to pay in at least £500 a month and set up two active direct debits.

You could earn 1% cashback on household bills, including water, council tax, gas and electric, broadband, mobile and paid-for TV bills, capped at £10 a month.

Further cashback of 1% is awarded on supermarket and travel spending, which includes petrol, electric vehicle charging, and train, bus and ferry fares, also capped at £10 a month.

Chase Bank gives 1% cashback on most purchase but only for 12 months. The 12 months starts from the date you activate cashback in the app.

Certain purchases aren't eligible for cashback, such as gambling - see a full list of exclusions on the Chase website.

If you have a Halifax Reward account, you can get £5 a month when you pay in £1,500, stay in credit and either spend £500 a month or keep a constant £5,000 in your account.

Or if you have a NatWest Reward or RBS Reward account, these pay £3 a month when you pay in £1,250, pay out two direct debits of at least £2 and log in to its mobile app each month.

The cashback is technically £5 a month but the account comes with a £2 fee, which takes this down to £3.
