A Government that cared about democracy would be doing everything in its power to encourage people to vote.

But the Tories are putting up barriers around the ballot box. At next month’s local elections in England, voters will be required for the first time to show ID at the polling station.

This is an unnecessary requirement when the scale of electoral fraud is so minimal.

The Conservatives are trying to suppress young adults from voting by drawing up a limited list of acceptable ID.

The reason is the Tories know younger people are more likely to vote Labour.

Today, the Mirror is launching a campaign to raise awareness and encourage people to register to vote.

Since the Tories came to power, the number of adults who are missing from the electoral roll has doubled to an estimated nine million.

The Conservatives do not want certain voices to be heard. If you want to protect democracy, you need to vote.

Very raw deal

Britain has some of the world’s most beautiful stretches of coastline.

What should be places of national pride have become areas of national shame due to the practices of privately-owned water firms.

Analysis has found sewage is dumped in our waters every three-and-a-bit minutes on average. It’s environmental vandalism caused by corporate greed and Government failure.

Since privatisation, the water firms have given £57billion in dividends to shareholders.

This is half what they spent on improving infrastructure and upgrading treatment plants.

Meanwhile, the Tories have cut funding for the organisations that monitor water quality.

The country has been failed by privatisation and failed by the Conservatives.
