Major Catholic child abuse report names 146 'who attacked 600 kids over years'

A damning report into Baltimore Catholic child abuse has named 146 alleged abusers who are accused of abusing 600 children for decades.
The Maryland Attorney General’s Office has publicly released a redacted version of an investigative report detailing sex abuse and examining the Archdiocese of Baltimore’s response.
The Archdiocese of Baltimore is the oldest Roman Catholic diocese in the country and spans much of Maryland, US.
The report stated: "Over hundred priests and other Archdiocese personnel engaged in horrific and repeated abuse of the most vulnerable children in their communities while Archdiocese leadership looked the other way.
"Time and again, members of the Church’s hierarchy resolutely refused to acknowledge allegations of child sexual abuse for as long as possible."

According to the report, "abusers preyed upon the children most devoted to the church: the altar servers and choir members, those who participated in church youth organisations and the Scout troops."
The redacted findings were made public on Wednesday, marking a significant development in an ongoing legal battle over their release and adding to growing evidence from parishes across the country as numerous similar revelations have rocked the Catholic Church in recent years.

Former Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh launched the probe in 2019 and announced its completion in November, saying investigators had reviewed over 100,000 pages of documents dating back to the 1940s and interviewed hundreds of victims and witnesses.
However, the report’s contents weren’t immediately released because they include information obtained from church officials via grand jury subpoenas, which are confidential proceedings in Maryland.
Lawyers for the state asked a court for permission to release the nearly 500-page document, which identifies 158 priests accused of abusing more than 600 victims over the past 80 years.
Baltimore Circuit Court Judge Robert Taylor ruled last month that a redacted version should be made public.
Baltimore Archbishop William Lori said in a statement ahead of the release of the report: “The report is likely to evoke many emotions: anger, disgust, disillusionment and sadness among them.
“Though the Archdiocese has made great strides over the last three decades to rid the Church of the scourge of abuse and to set the standard for how institutions should respond to allegations of child sexual abuse, the report covers a period in the Archdiocese’s past when our response to such allegations was woefully inadequate.”
Officials recently started making the necessary redactions, which included removing the names and titles of 37 people accused of wrongdoing.
"The need for disclosure outweighs the need for secrecy," Taylor wrote in his decision to release the report, saying a "public reckoning" may be the only form of justice available to some victims.
