Grey's Anatomy star Caterina Scorsone has opened up on the tragedy which saw a fire rip through their family home.

The terrible incident left four of her pets dead as flames destroyed the building.

The actress, 41, took to Instagram to share the awful details from the night in question, uploading snaps of the beloved pets who lost their lives and the disastrous scenes in the aftermath of the blaze.

The star revealed the incident actually happened a few months ago while she was getting her children ready for bed following their bath routine.

She wrote: "Smoke began to seep up through the grout around the tub. When I looked down the hallway a river of thick black smoke had already formed and was filling the house."

Caterina explained how quickly the fire occurred, explaining she only had "about two minutes" to get her three kids out of the burning building.

"We escaped with less than shoes on our feet," she continued. "But we got out. And for that I am eternally grateful."

However, all four of the family pets - three cats and one dog -were tragically killed in the fire, leaving the family to mourn their lives.

Caterina went on to say the reason for the upload was not to discuss the disaster, but to praise those around her who helped the family during their time of need.

She added: "Thank you to the firefighters and the investigators (thank you Trey!) Thank you to my neighbor who answered our frantic knocks at her door.

"Thank you to the parents at my kids’ school who sent toys and books, my friends at @greysabc and @shondaland who sent clothing and supplies, my sisters who flew in to handle logistics so that I could be with my kids. Thank you to my team who made everything easier."

And she admitted that the "only thing that matters" is the community spirit and revealed how grateful she was to those around her.

Posting the pics of the animals that died, she said she wanted to "honour the space we once called home, to say goodbye to the animals that loved us so well, and to celebrate that we have the only thing we ever really needed: each other".

Among them was Grey's Anatomy co-star Camilla Luddington, who wrote: "What an incredible mom inspiration you are.. you are SO loved!"
