Ryan Reynolds thought he was "going to die" after Wrexham moment of magic

Ryan Reynolds has recalled Wrexham's famous FA Trophy win against Stockport County in April 2022 - claiming he thought he was "going to die".

Wrexham, who are on course to win the National League title this season, reached the FA Trophy final a year ago after beating Stockport in a dramatic semi-final at the Racecourse. The game was heading to penalties before Paul Mullin stepped up.

Wrexham's talisman scored two goals in added-time to send the home fans wild. Both of the goals were simply outrageous, with Mullin chipping Stockport goalkeeper Ben Hinchcliffe twice. The forward's magic ensured a trip to Wembley for the Welsh club.

Wrexham's co-chair Reynolds was at the Racecourse to watch the drama unfold and has relived it a year on. The Hollywood star tweeted, "I've never yelled this loud in my life. I thought I was going to die when he put the ball in the air like that."

Reflecting on the game at the time, Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson said, "There was a bit of edginess in the first half and some uncharacteristic errors from both sides... But with Mulls on the pitch you always believe that you're going to get a goal."

Yet Wrexham's 2021/22 campaign ended in heartbreak. They went on to lose the FA Trophy final 1-0 to Bromley before Stockport pipped them to the National League title. They then missed out on promotion when Grimsby defeated them in the play-offs.

Nevertheless, the victory against Stockport will live long in the club's memory. The good times are back at the Racecourse following the arrival of Reynolds and co-owner Rob McElhenney, who is also a famous American actor, in 2020.

Wrexham are top of the National League table, three points ahead of Notts County in second with a game in hand. Parkinson's side have just six fixtures left and have already picked up 100 points. Only one team is automatically promoted from the fifth tier.

The presence of Reynolds and McElhenney has transformed Wrexham into a household name. The Welsh minnows have gained fame in the United States following the release of their documentary, Welcome to Wrexham . They are even set to tour the United States this summer, with a friendly against Manchester United pencilled in.

Wrexham recently signed former Premier League goalkeeper Ben Foster, who has more than one million subscribers on YouTube, to boost their promotion hopes. Foster helped his new team complete a 5-1 victory against Oldham Athletic in their last outing.

"Everyone is down to earth and the manager’s top class," said Foster, who first played for Wrexham 18 years ago, after completing his move. "It’s changed a lot since I was last here, but it’s nice to be back and it’s nice to be back as a player too."

Foster added, "I’m looking forward to getting started. The first time I was here, it was genuinely the springboard to the rest of my career – on the back of the loan move, playing in the LDV Vans Trophy Final at the Millennium Stadium, I got my move to Manchester United at the start of the next season. It was absolutely bonkers!"
