X-Files set for reboot with Black Panther director looking for a 'diverse cast'

The X-Files was a huge hit in the '90s

The iconic sci-fi series The X-Files is set for a reboot, with the director of Black Panther taking control of things.

The show's original creator, Chris Carter, revealed Ryan Coogler is the person tasked with bringing the hit series back to the small screen and said he will do so with a "diverse cast".

The X-Files was a huge success in its original form between 1993 and 2002, with Hollywood stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson dazzling fans as the impressive agents Mulder and Scully.

It made a short comeback for a solitary season in 2016 and the Carter has opened up about what fans can expect with the latest reboot.

Speaking on the CBC podcast On the Coast with Gloria Macarenko, Carter said: "I just spoke to a young man, Ryan Coogler, who is going to remount The X-Files with a diverse cast.

"So, he’s got his work cut out for him because we covered so much territory."

Coogler has a number of big hits behind him already, with the likes of Black Panther, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Creed on his resume.

His work has seen him win several awards, including four NAACP Image Awards, four Black Reel Awards and two Academy Award nominations.

Carter went on to say: "We’re so steeped in conspiracies now. The X-Files dealt with a central conspiracy, but now the world is so full of conspiracies that I think that it would be a different show."

It's expected the new cast won't feature the same main characters, but Duchovny previously refused to rule out a return.

In 2021, the actor admitted he doesn't "just say no to things like that" but co-star Anderson was a bit more set on her answer.

"It’s time for me to hang up Scully’s hat," she said on the TCA press tour in 2018. "It just is."

Anderson previously opened up on her belief that any return of the show should see more gender diversity on the writing team.

For the initial run, it had an all-male writing team, with Anderson saying in 2017: "I believe we can do better."
