Donald Trump campaigned for the presidency by pledging to “drain the swamp” and lock up Hillary Clinton.

Finally, he is being held accountable for his lies and bombast, and the former president now wallows like a giant orange hippo in the swamp he promised to drain.

If found guilty, he may be the one locked up.

The indictment would be a shameful moment for Trump if he had any sense of shame but it sends an important message that nobody is above the law.

There are worrying parallels between what is happening in America and Boris Johnson’s appearance before the Privileges Committee.

Allies of both have claimed they are victims of politically motivated stitch-ups, smearing those seeking to hold them to account.

It is imperative the judicial process against Trump runs its course without intimidation or interference. It is not just the former President who is on trial but the ability of the courts to uphold justice without fear or favour.

Breed apart

Eleven people, including five children aged under four, have been killed by dangerous dogs in the past 12 months.

One reason behind the surge in attacks is the rise of unlicensed “backyard breeders”.

Many are run by criminals seeking to cash in on the trend for aggressive breeds such as American Bullys.

They are not only flouting animal welfare rules, they are risking lives.

With the number of dog attacks at a 30-year high it is clear the laws need to be tightened.

That is why the Mirror is campaigning for an overhaul of the Dangerous Dogs Act and tougher measures against errant owners.

Only live once

The makers of the Bond films are offering fans a chance to walk in the spy’s footsteps by taking a 007-themed holiday.

There will be luxury hotels and stunning locations but the £60,000-a-head price tag may leave you shaken rather than stirred.
