Thousands of you think former Prime Minister Boris Johnson should step down as an MP over Partygate.

Mr Johnson is fighting for his political future as committee members weigh up whether he is guilty of contempt of Parliament.

In a tense three-and-a half-hour grilling last week, the rattled MP for Uxbridge and South Ruislip insisted he did not lie about rules being broken in Number 10 - saying statements were made to the Commons in 'good faith' based on assurances from senior staff.

More than 3,500 you voted in our poll Should Boris Johnson step down as MP after Partygate grilling?

During the Parliamentary Privileges Committee, Boris played down the five gatherings he attended, saying they were leaving dos and thanking staff was "absolutely essential for work purposes".

But the panel were uneasy about how much 'proper advice' Boris sought over whether regulations had been followed ahead of speaking at the dispatch box.

The seven-strong cross-party committee will rule on whether Mr Johnson committed a contempt of parliament. If it rules against him, he could be suspended - and may even have to fight a by-election.

Speaking after the hearing, Mr Johnson declined to give the committee any promise he would accept their conclusions.

Many of you commented on our original story, here's a selection of what you had to say:

'Surely people can see Johnson for what he is? A clown, a liar and a scoundrel'

Jz35: "He DEFINITELY SHOULDN’T stand down, he should be fired immediately, dishonourably dismissed, and prevented from making even more millions from immoral speeches!"

Scot1st: "(Boris has) admitted it, but as usual denies doing anything wrong."

Considerthis: "It's shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted but he should absolutely not be an MP, far too divisive and manipulating. Can never be trusted."

Seanguitar: "He should certainly be forced to step down, but he'll need some help, as he's likely to fall over if he tries stepping down from anything. He's been fortunate enough thus far that his wallet has managed to soften any blows, and he doesn't have very far to fall anymore."

Inglis25: "We don't want a scoundrel and a noted liar in the UK Government. This Conservative party should be forced out of office for the mess they have made of our economy and for the state of disrepair in every town and village. We are sick of the lot of them ... Surely people can see Johnson for what he truly is? A clown, a noted liar and a scoundrel. I wouldn't employ a person like that to sweep the streets never mind trust him to run our country."

MJ55: "Yes! As soon as Boris is consigned to the history books the better."

Martin20: "How on earth is this man still an MP? Surely he should resign. He has to go down as the worst prime minister of all time. He is nothing but a bare-faced liar. People lost loved ones and followed the rules while this man brazenly broke them. Shame on you Boris Johnson."

Lizajane1946: "Yes, he should definitely quit".

Contrarian Viewpoint: "He's been a serial liar throughout his life, long before he became a politician. He is totally unsuited to any role of responsibility and those who have just reselected him as a Tory candidate should be ashamed of themselves. But then again they're Tories and therefore have no shame."

AngeC65: "We followed the rules. My mum sadly passed away on Christmas Day, 2020. She should have been surrounded by her family but because we followed his rules she passed away with just my son and I with her. We couldn't even give her the funeral we wanted to. Boris is despicable."

Michaelpeter: "Boris should do the right thing for once. He has had his chances and used up all of his nine lives. So come on, BoJo, do the right thing and retire for the sake of the country and all those people you let down during Covid."

'A Remainer stitch up from start to finish and we all know it'

Cauliflowercheese: "He should run for PM again and keep the Labour Party out."

Rainey35: "All government lie and fool the public so he’s no different from the other hundreds that are politicians!"

Jedi Jones: "A Remainer stitch up from start to finish and we all know it. There's no depth the Remainers won't go to in their quest to overturn the Brexit vote."

Idopas: " Boris won't care either way, he will earn millions on the talking circuit. He. Doesn't. Care."
