'Mother-in-law translated my first language for me, I had to fight back tears'

A woman is fuming with her mother-in-law after she translated a conversation for her, despite it being in her first language. The woman had been visiting some of her husband's family when she was entered into a conversation in Spanish, the first language.

However, after a while in the conversation, the mother-in-law thought the woman was losing concentration in it so offered to break everything down for her in 'simple words' so that she would understand.

The woman was left fuming and when she told her husband about the embarrassing situation, he just said that is how she is.

Taking to Reddit, the woman, who remained anonymous, explained: "While going to see my husband aunt (from his dad’s side) his uncle asks me a question in Spanish. It was about when my child is going to stop breastfeeding.

"I responded back but then the other aunts and mother-in-law chime in giving their two cents and the conversation goes back to me. I really wasn’t paying attention so I gave them a confused look."

She added that one of the aunts then exclaimed that the woman was more comfortable in English, which she admits is true - but she is also fine with Spanish. However, she was not pleased with what happened next, as she wrote:

"This resulted in my mother-in-law “offering” to translate what they were saying in extremely broken Spanish so I could understand," she said.

"Once she did that I wanted to cry but held it in. After this incident I told my husband but he said that’s how they are. I also told my mum and she agrees with me that it was totally disrespectful. Now I’m not sure whether or not to confront her."

In response, many have sided with the upset mum and said the mother-in-law was unreasonable.

One person wrote: "I’m sorry that happened to you. I am so sick of hearing that’s just the way she is/they are. People don’t change because nobody has ever stood up to them. It won’t stop until that happens."

While another stated: "If that's how they are you don't have spend time with them. And he can parrot back that's how you are when they complain."
