Apprentice winner Marnie Swindells was one of the tens of thousands of people to benefit from the Bounce Back loan scheme.

As we revealed yesterday, her company could be investigated amid claims it may not have been eligible for the money.

Ms Swindells insists she has done nothing wrong and the loan is being paid back.

The spotlight is shining on her because of her appearance on the TV reality show but it should be shining on then-Chancellor Rishi Sunak, the architect of Bounce Back loans.

The guardian of taxpayers’ money set up a scheme that was open to large-scale fraud.

Some applicants used the money to fund their drug habits, others took out multiple loans worth £200,000 for companies which had turnovers of less than £5,000.

The scheme was so badly implemented that it could end up costing the taxpayer £27billion in fraud or credit losses, according to MPs.

This is a scandalous waste of money by a Government that claims it cannot afford to give teachers a pay rise, repair our crumbling hospitals and increase benefits for the poorest.

Law & disorder

Labour leader Keir Starmer yesterday set out in sobering detail how the Tories have failed on law and order.

Knife and violent crime are on the rise, there is a record backlog of cases in the courts and just 5% of offences result in a police charge.

All of these are a stain on the Conservatives’ record but by far their worst failure is the rise in levels of violence against women and girls.

Starmer pointed out only 1.6% of reported rapes lead to someone being charged.

Yet again, it will require a Labour Government to repair the damage caused by 13 years of Tory rule.
