This Mother’s Day is an extra-special one for Ferne McCann.

Not only will she be celebrating the occasion with her five-year-old daughter Sunday and her own mum Gilly, but it’s her last as a mum-of-one.

The reality star is currently expecting her second child, due to arrive this summer. And while she’s clearly excited about her pregnancy, Ferne admits that expanding her family is something she is still getting her head around.

“I’m like, ‘Wow, I’m going to have two children – that’s more responsibility, more moments, more tantrums,’” the 32-year-old explains. “Even speaking about it now, I’m like, ‘Wow, this is actually happening!’ It will all fall into place, but it’s big.”

The Essex girl describes being pregnant as “really positive”, adding, “Babies and children coming into the world, they’re such little blessings. I’ve got something to work towards and I’m really excited for that moment when the baby’s here. It has given me that focus again.”

Like most mums, the former TOWIE star has experienced the many ups and downs of raising a child – only in her case, those highs and lows have been documented on her ITVBe show, First Time Mum.

Showing the struggles she faced earned her a legion of dedicated fans and the support she received from other mums is what kept her going when she felt alone.

“I love receiving those sorts of messages, especially from single parents,” she says. “It was so tough and I felt so lonely at times.

“Sharing that with the viewers of the show has been humbling. You feel connected to these people in some way.”

It’s been quite a journey for Ferne, who got engaged to boyfriend Lorri Haines after a romantic proposal last July. The pair met in 2021 after Lorri, 31, slid into her DMs. Much to her delight, she will be raising her second child with the marketing tech entrepreneur by her side – but the survival instincts she developed as a single mum still remain.

“When I was pregnant, I was against being labelled a single mother and then when I gave birth to Sunday, it [became] something I [was] proud of,” she says. “I’ll always have that feeling of that ‘warrior single motherhood’ inside of me.”

Motherhood is clearly an emotional subject for Ferne, who wells up when we ask about her relationship with her daughter. “We’re very close and that bond will never be broken, because it was me and her for a very long time,” she says. “It’s always been me and her and that relationship is so tight. She saved me in many senses. I became a warrior when Sunday was born – I found my purpose.

“She was my light at the end of the tunnel. I just love her so much. It’s been one hell of a journey. I hope when we’re older she feels how I feel about my bond with my mum.”

The star tells us she has an “amazing relationship” with Gilly – a regular on First Time Mum – and explains why Mother’s Day itself is such an important day for her.

“It’s a chance to celebrate how powerful mothers are and what they do in this world,” she says. “I think it’s the toughest job and it’s not always sweetness and roses. It’s hard, and there are days and nights [when] I feel like I’m doubting myself. I think mothers can be hard on themselves, because ultimately you just want the best for your children. So, it’s a day to celebrate the work they do.”

Talk turns to her second child and Ferne tells us that Sunday is “over the moon”. She is already besotted with her mum’s bump.

The star hopes to have a home water birth, but says she won’t be finding out the baby’s gender until it’s born.

“We made the decision in the end not to find out because I didn’t find out with Sunday,” she says. “I loved that moment of surprise and I felt nobody could take that away from me.

“Lorri found out with Noah [his son from a previous relationship], so it’s really nice to have that surprise. I don’t have any inkling whatsoever. My preference is for a girl, but that’s just because I can see myself with girls because I have Sunday. But really, I’m not bothered so long as it’s healthy.”

Since leaving TOWIE in 2016, Ferne has carved out a successful TV career, starring in top reality shows including I’m A Celebrity... and Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins. Now, she’s stepping back into the spotlight as First Time Mum returns to our screens. And Ferne says that nothing will be off limits when it comes to documenting her latest pregnancy journey – including the birth itself.

“I really want that moment on camera and filmed for me personally,” she says. “And because it’s such a special moment, I’d love to share it with the First Time Mum audience. I guess they’ve been on the whole journey with us.”

Ferne McCann: First Time Mum is on Wednesday, 9pm, ITVBe, and is available on ITVX
