Today was a chance for the government to match the ambition of Britain.

Every part of our country, every village, town and city holds so much potential and promise to help get our economy on a better path.

Instead of lurching from crisis to crisis, down their path of managed decline, the Tories could have shown that they understood the scale of the challenge.

But apart from when they’re poaching Labour policies, they just gave us more of the same.

Nothing but more sticking plasters and papering over the cracks.

After 13 years of economic failure, missed opportunities and mismanagement, the Tories can't fix the problem, because they are problem.

And we all know whose side they are on.

Instead of a long-term plan to make your family better off, they reach out to help the very wealthiest people in the country.

While working people face the biggest tax burden since Churchill was Prime Minister, Sunak boosts the richest 1% and their pension pots.

While working people foot the bill for keeping energy bills low, the oil and gas giants making record profits aren’t asked to put in a bit more after a bumper year.

Instead of coming forward with a proper plan to expand our NHS workforce, paid for by scrapping non dom status, there is still no proper plan for our health service.

Politics is about choices. These are the choices they make. 13 years of them have left the economy in a mess, and today’s decisions leave it there.

Labour is the change our country needs.
