The Ogre's cold air from Norway will send daytime temperatures tumbling again to 3C to 6C for most by Wednesday.

Blustery winds are due for many at times, with stormy gusts nudging 70mph later in the week in the North. Sharp downpours will hit the South during the week.

"Temperatures will plummet, with frost returning."

A Met Office forecaster said: "Sunday will have heavy rain and be mild in the South.

"Monday turns colder further north with snow, with Tuesday cold with wintry showers and Wednesday seeing snow and rain spread from the west.

The new alert covers all of Scotland, parts of Wales and extends as far south in England as Birmingham.

It comes as people are still recovering form the ongoing snow showers which battered the country on Saturday.

The Met Office said: "Cold air spreading southwards across the UK, following a band of rain, sleet and snow, will bring frequent snow showers to northern, western, and eastern Scotland, as well as parts of Northern Ireland.

"Overnight, these will accumulate on some roads and pavements, with anywhere between a light dusting and several cm of snow possible.

"Between the showers, partially melted snow is likely to freeze on untreated surfaces leading to icy stretches.

"Wintry showers will continue through Tuesday, although by mid-morning the temperature on most roads will likely have risen sufficiently to reduce the risk of further accumulating snow or ice."
