A lucky woman has revealed she won $50,000 on a lottery scratchcard after purchasing the last ticket left in a vending machine.

Denise McIntosh, from Baltimore, Maryland, US, had bought five losing cards in a row from a self-service machine and had given up hope of winning after losing on all of them.

But when she saw there was just one left, she snapped it up - and realised she had won a massive prize.

Nursing home worker Denise said in a statement on February 6: "I thought, 'Let me buy that last one'."

She added: "I scratched it while walking out of the store and then I scanned it on my phone. I said, 'I think I'm going to cry!'."

She was stunned when she realised that she had just won $50,000 (£42,000).

Lucky Denise told how she could not sleep that night because she was worried about having a valuable ticket in her house.

A few days later, she rushed to the Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore and collected her prize, which she said was life-changing.

She revealed that she first plans to use some of the money and pay off some bills.

The lottery added that the Walmart retailer who sold the ticket received a $500 (£417) bonus for selling a top-prize winning scratch-off.

The win comes just days after a lucky teenager scooped $48million (£30m) on her first ever lottery ticket.

Juliette Lamour, from Ontario, Canada, had just turned 18 when she was told by her grandad to purchase a lottery ticket, which turned out to be a stroke of genius.

The win made the young woman, from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, the youngest big lottery winner in Canadian history.

"I just turned 18 and my grandfather suggested I buy a lottery ticket for fun," explained Juliette during a winner’s celebration at the lottery HQ in Sault Ste. Marie.

She continued: "When I went to the store, I wasn’t sure what to ask for because I had never bought a ticket before, so I called my dad who told me to buy a LOTTO 6/49 Quick Pick.

"I still can’t believe I hit the GOLD BALL jackpot on my very first lottery ticket!"

The teenager has pledged to finish school and then go with her parents travelling.

She continued: "While I am so excited about the opportunities that lie ahead, I feel comforted knowing I am surrounded by the grounding love of my family.

They will be with me on every step of this incredible journey," Juliette said.
