Kylian Mbappe became Paris Saint-Germain's record scorer on Saturday night by bagging his 201st goal for the Ligue 1 champions.

The France international, 24, signed a new deal at PSG last year - turning down the chance to join Real Madrid. It is believed to have been one of the motivations behind his contract extension was to break Edinson Cavani's scoring record for the club - a feat he has now achieved.

Mbappe made history during PSG's 4-2 victory against Nantes. The World Cup winner scored in added time to write his name even more firmly into the club's history books and send Christophe Galtier's side 11 points clear of Marseille in second at the top of Ligue 1.

Mbappe broke the record with a clinical finish. PSG youngster Timothee Pembele won possession high up the pitch and produced a low cross into the feet of Mbappe. The forward took a touch with his right foot, turned and swept the ball home with his left.

"It's a priviledge to play for Paris Saint-Germain," said Mbappe at full-time. "It's special to be a PSG player, as this is my city. I'm here to write history - In France, in the capital, in my country, in my city. It's beautiful - but I want also collective [team] achievements."

PSG handed a special '201' trophy to Mbappe after the game to mark his achievement. He is now ahead of Cavani (200 goals), Zlatan Ibrahimovic (156), Neymar (118) and Portuguese forward Pauleta (109) in PSG's scoring charts. He only turned 24 in December.

The Frenchman joined PSG, initially on loan, from Ligue 1 rivals Monaco in the summer of 2017. He's been prolific ever since that transfer - reaching his latest landmark in just 247 games. In comparison, Cavani played 301 games for the Parisian club.

Mbappe was tipped to leave PSG for Real when his previous contract was due to expire last June. Yet he completed a transfer U-turn - just weeks before the summer window.

Mbappe's current deal is due to expire in June 2025, although it is believed he can leave PSG on a free transfer in 14 months' time thanks to a clause in the paperwork. After his latest feat, there is little left for the 2017 Golden Boy winner to achieve in Paris.

As reported by French newspaper L'Equipe, Mbappe's desire to become PSG's leading scorer was one of the reasons why he put pen to paper on a new deal. The player is said to be 'very attached' to breaking records and achieving feats that are not questionable.

Mbappe has already won five Ligue 1 titles and three French Cups - among other honours - during his time in French football. The only thing left for him to win at PSG is the Champions League. The French giants are still waiting for their maiden European Cup.

The big question for Mbappe is whether he should try to bring the European Cup back to the Parc des Princes or join Real - the reigning European champions - to boost his hopes of winning the competition. A move to the Premier League may also appeal to him.
