EastEnders fans were baffled by one particular detail on Tuesday night’s episode, that Dot Cotton’s house is worth £1 million.

Soap legend June Brown who played Dot for over 30 years on the show, died in April at the age of 95, and Dot subsequently passed away on the show in December.

Her Albert Square house went to her step-granddaughter Sonia, played by Natalie Cassidy, who is struggling with her finances after forking out £196,000 in inheritance tax.

However, some keen viewers were left confused by this hefty bill, as it suggested that Dot’s house had the value of £1 million.

Viewers took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the error. One wrote: "How can it be such a high inheritance tax... That house ain't worth £1million it's a dump.”

As another added: "Sonia on EastEnders has apparently inherited an unencumbered house and has to pay inheritance tax if £196k on it.... It would be worth £1m+ so get a mortgage or sell it love. Sorry if my heart doesn't bleed for you!!”

A third claimed: "Inheritance tax is £10,000 for each £100,000. So that makes Dot's house worth nearly £2million. How many unlikely millionaires own their own house on the Square? Obviously, I'm no accountant and I could be mistaken…"

One confused fan said: "£196k - that’s got to be nearly what that house is worth?!"

However, some viewers took a practical approach and suggested that houses in prime London locations all sell for thousands above the rest of the country.

Yet, even with this revelation Sonia is more concerned with how to make ends meet after this enormous tax bill.

One viewer sympathised with her and suggested: "Where is Sonia going to find the £192k to pay the inheritance tax on Dot’s house I wonder — maybe Reiss will turn out to be rich and help?”
