Ukrainian prosecutors send former Atomenergomash executive to trial in bribery case
Ukrainian anti-corruption prosecutors have sent a former executive at the state nuclear operator to trial on charges of demanding more than $147,000 in kickbacks from private contractors, law enforcement officials announced Tuesday.
The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine alleged that the defendant, a former deputy director general at Atomenergomash—a subsidiary of the state nuclear agency Energoatom—forced a contractor to pay monthly bribes equal to 10 to 15 percent of completed work. In exchange, she ensured state invoices were paid on time and the contractor was allowed to fulfill its obligations, prosecutors said.
Investigators said she ultimately pocketed approximately $37,200 from that scheme. She is also accused of separately seeking about $8,700 for herself and associates to help a company win a public tender, secure a contract, and receive prompt disbursements.
The trial comes amid heightened scrutiny of graft within Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, where Energoatom has frequently found itself in the crosshairs of federal anti-corruption agencies. A broader investigation into the agency, known as "Operation Midas," previously exposed shadow managers who demanded identical 10-to-15 percent cuts and laundered roughly $100 million, though anti-corruption officials did not explicitly connect the current defendant to that broader network.
