Her husband woke to the sound of screaming before he saw a saw a figure leaving the bedroom, it was said.

The Old Bailey heard James, 46, then jumped out of a window and broke both ankles before being detained by police nearby.

Prosecutor Charlene Sumnall said before the random attack, James allegedly walked through a playing field in Hayes dressed all in black and carrying a large knife.

He was seen on CCTV approaching three different addresses before stabbing a man in his 20s in the back on the street, the court heard.

Ms Sumnall said minutes later – at around 7.51am – James allegedly kicked at the door of the family home while they were asleep in bed.

Kirandeep, who had given birth three months before the horror, suffered a single stab wound to the chest and was declared dead 25 minutes later.

The court was told both victims were complete strangers to the defendant.

James, who is charged with murder, attempted murder and possession of a bladed article, spoke only to confirm his identity during the hearing and was remanded into custody.

A plea hearing has been sent for October 1, with a provisional three-week trial due to take place from April 5 next year.
