A central figure of London’s Swinging Sixties, Lady Annabel had her name immortalised when her husband named a city nightclub after her.

Annabel’s, launched in 1963 by Goldsmith’s first husband, Mark Birley, became, for a time, the premier haunt of high society.

She went on to have six children, who themselves pursued high-profile careers.

They include journalist and film producer Jemima Goldsmith and Zac Goldsmith, the former Conservative MP for Richmond Park.

Her children are said to be “desperately saddened” by the news, MailOnline reports.

Beyond her notable marriages and much-chronicled social life, she is best known for her philanthropy and lasting influence in British high society.

Reflecting on the famed Annabel’s nightclub, she once remarked: "The dance floor was one of the hottest six-foot-square pieces of ground in London.

"I don’t remember seeing it empty. Everyone from the Kennedys to the Royal Family came, and I once found myself standing next to Frank Sinatra without realising it."

Born Annabel Vane-Tempest-Stewart in 1934, she was the daughter of the 8th Marquess of Londonderry and was raised between her family’s estates in England and Northern Ireland.

Throughout her life, her style, poise and discretion made her an icon of high society.

Her 1978 marriage to financier and politician Sir James Goldsmith further connected her to the political sphere.
