Mother holding baby slips £2,000 worth of drugs to prisoner during hug

A mum holding her baby slipped £2,000 worth of drugs down an inmate’s trousers while giving him a hug. Rebecca Gray was caught passing over the drugs parcel worth £2,000 at HMP Berwyn in Wrexham.

She admitted bringing a prohibited article into a prison on April 1, 2023. A judge at Mold Crown Court said the offence was made worse by the presence of a child - North Wales Live reports.

He gave Gray, 27, of Halton Lodge Avenue, Runcorn, an eight-month prison sentence but suspended it for two years. The court heard Gray had been visiting prisoner Connor Vibrams, 28, at the jail.

She was seen placing items down the waistband of Vibrams’ trousers while hugging him and holding her baby. Staff intervened and found 80g of cannabis worth £600 outside prison but £1,650 inside it.

There was also a 20g package of tobacco worth £400 inside HMP Berwyn. Gray was arrested and a phone she had put in a visitor locker was examined.

It had messages indicating she was being paid £1,600 to bring in a "big bar" of a substance. She gave no comment answers in interview.

When he was interviewed Vibrams said he had been in an "on-off" relationship with Gray. He admitted she passed him tobacco but denied she passed him cannabis.

He has already received an 18-month jail term for his part in the incident, the court heard today. Jeremy Rawson, defending, said Gray has three children who have been taken into care.

She has been homeless and in temporary accommodation but now has a stable address. The judge His Honour Niclas Parry said only a custodial sentence would do.

He added: "That’s because drugs in prison are a valuable commodity and these drugs had a value of over £2,000. They are valuable because they can be used to intimidate, they are the cause of violence, they add to the risks of prison staff" and undermine the purpose of prisons. He added that it was an aggravating feature of the case that a child was present. It would have been "a distraction from suspicion".

Imposing the suspended jail term he ordered Gray to attend 20 days of rehabilitation activity and as punishment to wear an electronic tag during a two-month curfew between 7pm and 7am.
