Two bodies discovered on JetBlue flight from JFK to Fort Lauderdale

The bodies were confirmed by officials to have been found inside a JetBlue compartment after it arrived at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida.

The bodies of two people have been found inside the landing gear of a JetBlue airliner shortly after it landed in Florida.

Both bodies were found inside the compartment of the JetBlue flight that left JFK Airport in New York before arriving at its final destination in Florida on Monday night. An investigation into the deaths and the circumstances around it has been launched.

 A JetBlue spokesperson told The Mirror: "On Monday evening, January 6, at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLHIA), two individuals were found in the landing gear compartment of one of our aircraft during the routine post-flight maintenance inspection. Tragically, both individuals were deceased.

"At this time, the identities of the individuals and the circumstances surrounding how they accessed the aircraft remain under investigation. This is a heartbreaking situation, and we are committed to working closely with authorities to support their efforts to understand how this occurred."

An investigation has been launched into the circumstances behind the two deaths 

A spokesperson for the airport told The Mirror: "There are no impacts to FLL operations due to this incident." The Mirror has contacted the local sheriff’s department for comment.

According to FlightAware.com, the flight departed New York’s JFK Airport just before 8pm. The flight arrived 28 minutes late at 11:10pm local time. JetBlue told Fox35 the plane had most recently operated flight 1801.

 Alex Browning, a reporter for Florida network WSVN7 News, shared a photo of a Broward County Sheriff van outside the airport. Medical examiners were also reported to have been seen outside the airport after the bodies were found.

The investigation was launched at Terminal 3, where JetBlue is based at the airport. Today, people were seen carrying luggage in and out of the airport.

FLHIA is one of the country’s busiest airports and served an estimated 35.1 million passengers in 2023, according to the Broward County website. This represented an increase of about 10.8 per cent on the previous year.

While full circumstances around the deaths is not known at this point, numerous airlines have found the bodies of individuals who have ended up in the landing gear compartment of their aircraft. According to the US Federal Aviation Administration, 132 people attempted to stowaway in the landing gear of commercial aircraft between 1947 an 2021 with the mortality rate estimated to be 77 per cent.

In one instance from 2021, the body of a man was discovered in landing gear section of a pane that landed in Amsterdam, in the Netherlands, after it departed Nigeria. In September 2023, the body of an African man, aged between 30 and 40, was found in the landing gear of an aircraft that landed in Istanbul, Turkey.
