Virgil van Dijk offered to Real Madrid as club reacts to agent’s proposal
Virgil van Dijk has been one of the club’s most important players since he arrived from Southampton in 2018 but Liverpool risk losing him on a free transfer - and Real Madrid have emerged as a possible destination.
Real Madrid have reportedly turned down the opportunity to sign Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk after the Dutchman’s agent offered him to the La Liga club.
Van Dijk is set to become a free agent in the summer as things stand, with the Liverpool captain yet to agree a new contract at Anfield.
The 33-year-old has been one of the club’s most important players since he arrived from Southampton in 2018, helping the Reds win the Champions League and Premier League in his eight-year spell.
But he is now at risk of leaving Anfield for nothing at the end of the season if Liverpool cannot agree fresh terms, with the club also in danger of losing Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold to free transfers.
According to Spanish outlet Relevo, Van Dijk’s agent had offered the player to Real Madrid over a possible free transfer, but the club have declined the opportunity.
The representative is said to have contacted Madrid officials to inform them that the veteran defender was keen on a move to the Bernabeu, especially knowing the team have struggled with injuries at centre-back to David Alaba and Eder Militao.
But Madrid reportedly refused to take up the option because they are looking at other players who are better suited to their project. Van Dijk is not the only Liverpool linked with Real Madrid.
Alexander-Arnold is said to be a huge target for Carlo Ancelotti’s men and the club have already made a bid for the right-back, which has been rejected.
Trent Alexander-Arnold has also been linked with a move to Real Madrid
Van Dijk recently discussed speculation surround the futures of Alexander-Arnold and himself after Liverpool’s 2-2 draw against Manchester United.
The 26-year-old put in a poor display and faced claims he is distracted amid speculation, but Van Dijk refuted the idea.
He said: "I am fine with [speculation]. Trent has his own people around him, his family and we are there as well. He wants to perform in the best way possible like we all do. That is the main focus. In my opinion, maybe ask him, that is the distraction… the game."
