A British woman, aged 44, has sadly died after crashing her car in Italy - police spotted her car in a canal but by the time they retrieved her body it was too late

A British woman has tragically died after crashing her car and ending up a canal in Italy.

Police noticed the vehicle in the water half-hidden among vegetation during a routine patrol on Monday morning (December 9). The incident happened not too far from the city of Naples.

The officers alerted firefighters who managed to retrieve the victim before the car fully submerged. Emergency services attempted to revive her at the scene. Despite their best efforts, she was sadly pronounced dead before she was taken to a nearby Institute of Forensic Medicine for an autopsy.

According to local media, CCTV footage obtained by the police showed the woman crash after she hit a pothole. The reports suggested the road was wet at the time of the tragedy.

Her Fiat Punto is said to have overturned before ending up in the water. The alarm was raised around 9am yesterday. Shocking pictures show rescue teams in the water as they attempt to retrieve the sinking car.

The drama occurred in the commune of Villa Literno in the province of Caserta, around 15 miles northwest of the southern Italian city of Naples.

The woman killed is understood to have lived in Pozzuoli on the outskirts of Naples. Her car was winched out of the water by a crane after her body was removed.

There have been no reports pointing to anyone else being in the vehicle. It remains unclear what the woman was doing in the area. Police have confirmed an investigation is underway.

Earlier this year, a British police officer sadly died following a crash on holiday in Italy. David Conahan, from Oxford, was on vacation in Via Della Liberta, Mestre, Venice, when the horrific incident took place on August 7.

His heartbroken friend had to identify him to the police, reports Oxford Mail. In September, an inquest at Oxford Coroners Court revealed that his cause of death was ’spinal trauma’. The exact circumstances of the crash remain unclear.
