The Royal Navy has been staging exercises at sea weeks after Vladimir Putin staged his own war games in the Arctic.

A drone successfully dropped bombs on the XV Patrick Blackett – the navy’s experimental vessel built at a cost of £7million.

The exercise was to show off the latest advancements in Britain’s warfare technology.

Britain is among 27 nations participating in Nato’s Digital Ocean Initiative taking place in Portugal.

The event, in the Troia Peninsula, showcased the Royal Navy’s use of autonomous systems in military exercises.

The naval warforce unleashed a wide range of uncrewed systems, including hand-launched drones, surveillance drones, mini quadcopters, and Pacific 24 boats.

Nato said the wargames reflect the modern military methods at sea, as witnessed in Ukraine’s attacks on Russia’s navy with uncrewed drone boats.

Last week, Putin sent two nuclear submarines under the polar icecap in the largest naval war exercise since the Cold War.

The Emperor Alexander III strategic nuclear submarine – capable of carrying Kalibr hypersonic atomic missiles – was ordered on a ‘subglacial march’ along with the Krasnoyarsk Yasen-M class nuclear-powered attack sub.

A statement from the Alliance said: ‘In response to a more challenging security environment, Nato is stepping up efforts to deter and respond to threats in the maritime domain.

‘Allies are strengthening situational awareness with new emerging and disruptive technologies.

‘It includes conducting more high-end exercises connecting maritime surveillance assets across Allied nations below, on and above the sea.’

The Royal Navy said: ‘A range of drones and uncrewed vessels were deployed on a major international exercise in Portugal as the Royal Navy looks to push its latest technology to its limits.

‘Autonomous Pacific 24 ribs, hand-launched drones, mini quadcopters and surveillance drones will join specially designed shipping containers and experimentation vessel XV Patrick Blackett for Nato’s annual uncrewed wargames.’

The drills, under the name REPMUS 24, have been held since September 9 and will continue until Friday.

UK personnel joined with those from 26 other nations for the exercise, which has mostly focused on uncrewed systems and looks to take kit and equipment from test phases to integration into operations and task groups.
