Former West Ham and Fulham star John Paintsil has been rushed to hospital after being involved in a horrifying car crash.

Paintsil enjoyed a six-year spell in the Premier League after featuring for the Hammers, Fulham and Leicester City, with the 43-year-old currently working as assistant manager to Otto Addo at the Ghana national team.

It is believed Paintsil was travelling with Addo and goalkeeping coach Fatawu Dauda back to the capital city of Accra after watching a cup final on Saturday when in the accident occured.

The three men were taken to hospital, with the Ghanaian FA providing an update to report that they are in a "stable condition" following treatment.

"Members of the Black Stars technical team were involved in a road accident while returning from Tarkwa," the statement said.

"The vehicle carrying Head Coach Otto Addo, Assistant Coach John Paintsil and goalkeepers trainer Fatawu Dauda avoided a head-on collision with a pickup truck which veered off into its lane, with some damage to the vehicle.

"All three members of the technical team are in stable condition, and will undergo further medical assessments upon their return to Accra."

Paintsil was something of a journeyman in his career, starting with Ghanian side Berekum Arsenal before turning out for Maccabi and Harpoel Tel Aviv, then making the move to the Premier League with West Ham in 2006.

He spent two years with the Hammers before joining Fulham in 2008 and forming part of the side that reached the Europa League final in 2010.

Paintsil then signed for Leicester in 2011 before rounding off his career in Israel and South Africa. He retired in 2016 and switched his attentions to coaching as he became assistant manager of the Kaizer Chiefs in South Africa the same year.
