Joe Biden has declared his support for Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee for the upcoming presidential election following his confirmation that he would not run for reelection

Joe Biden has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee for the forthcoming presidential election.

In a statement on X, following his shock announcement that he’d be stepping down from the presidential race, Biden declared his support for VP Harris.

He wrote: "My fellow Democrats, I have chosen not to pursue the nomination and instead concentrate all my efforts on fulfilling my duties as President for the rest of my term. My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to select Kamala Harris as my Vice President.

"And it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today I want to extend my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be our party’s nominee this year. Democrats - it’s time to unite and defeat Trump. Let’s do this."

This ringing endorsement comes hot on the heels of Biden’s announcement that he is withdrawing from the presidential race, stepping down as the Democratic nominee amid mounting pressure to abandon his re-election bid, reports the Mirror US

The sitting president shared his statement on X, highlighting his achievements over the past four years. He pointed out some of the landmark moments during his tenure: tackling a once-in-a-century pandemic, passing the most significant bill to fight global warming and enacting the largest legislation to reduce gun violence.

He wrote: ""It has been the greatest honour of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.

"I will speak to the Nation later this week in more detail about my decision. For now, let me express my deepest gratitude to all those who have worked so hard to see me reelected. I want to thank Vice President Kamala Harris for being an extraordinary partner in all this work. And let me express my heartfelt appreciation to the American people for the faith and trust you have placed in me."
