Tory minister becomes the first to acknowledge they likely won’t win the General Election

Grant Shapps has admitted a Conservative Party victory in the upcoming General Election is not likely.

The Defence Secretary expressed what many have believed from the start of campaigning – that the Government will suffer a serious wipeout on July 4.

He told Times Radio: ‘Yes, it is possible to win the election. Do I accept it is not the most likely outcome? Yes, I accept that, I am a realist.’

Polls continue to show a Conservative defeat, with the Labour party still on average around 20 points ahead.

Mr Shapps still urged voters to not choose Reform UK over his party, saying this would hand Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer ‘unchecked power’.

He told LBC: ‘If you vote Reform, or Lib Dem, or any other direction for that matter, that simply helps Keir Starmer go in with unchecked power to do things like release all the people who’ve already been rounded up to be deported.’
