Major outage leaves thousands of customers unable to access banking app

Thousands of NatWest customers have been unable to log into their banking apps this morning after a major outage hit the service.

The issues started around 5.30am, with users logging into the app met with an error page.

Problems have been reported across Britain on Down Detector, although are mostly focused across England and south Wales.

NatWest has said it is aware of the issues. Responding to customers on X, the customer services team wrote: ‘Hi there. We’re aware that customers currently aren’t able to access their app or online banking.

‘We’ve reported this internally and it’s currently being looked into by our tech team. We’re hoping this will be resolved as soon as possible.

‘Sorry for any inconvenience.’

However, there is no indication yet as to when the issue may be resolved.

The standard error message shown in the app suggests customers check their WiFi and make sure they’re using the latest version of the app.

According to NatWest, more than 10 million of its customers use the banking app every day.

Some of those affected took to social media.

One customer, Jess, wrote: ‘I hope @NatWest_Help will be issuing refunds on account charges for today as their online banking app is down.’

Broadcaster Peter Bleksley asked: ‘Dear @NatWest_Help, I cannot access your online banking system, nor your mobile app. Have you been hacked?’

However, shortly after 8am reports on Down Detector began to fall, suggesting a fix may be underway.
