Homes were evacuated on a Bristol street and the bomb squad called in after concerns over explosive materials and unlicensed weaponry, with a 59-year-old suspect in police custody

Bomb squad officers descended on a residential street over fears of a property containing explosive materials and unlicensed weaponry.

Residents of Blaise Walk, in Sea Mills, Bristol, had to leave their homes as Explosive Ordnance Disposal personnel and police conducted a search of a residential property. Yesterday, Friday, May 24, Blaise Walk saw a significant police presence and a cordon in place. Police first entered a home on Thursday, May 23, and found what was suspected to be a live ordnance.

The police have now arrested a 59-year-old man on suspicion of possession of a firearm without a certificate. No explosive devices, ammunition or other ordnance were located at the property during the lengthy search which was still ongoing late on Friday night, BristolLive reports.

As of Saturday morning the property search concluded and the cordon has been lifted, with people allowed to return to their homes. The suspect remains in police custody. A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police said: "Searches are being carried out at a residential address in the Sea Mills area of Bristol following the execution of a warrant and arrest of a 59-year-old man on suspicion of possession of a firearm without a certificate on Thursday, May 23.

"As part of these searches, suspected ordinance was located inside the address this afternoon May 24. As a result, a cordon was put in place and officers requested the residents of neighbouring homes be evacuated. The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit attended and confirmed no live ordinance was in the property and have since left. The cordon has been lifted and searches of the property by officers continue."
