Journalists in Croatia are facing a wave of attacks and violent threats from supporters of the far-right party that has just won power in a new coalition government.
The Homeland Movement party is threatening to shut down one of Croatia’s main independent news outlets, Novosti, and is forming plans to stamp out “unpatriotic” behavior by journalists in other media.
On Friday, the party announced a coalition deal with incumbent Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, whose center-right party fell short of an overall majority in April elections. The new coalition has provoked alarm from campaigners for a free press.
