Sadiq Khan is on course to win an unprecedented third term as London Mayor, Labour has said.

Party insiders believe Khan is set to beat Tory Susan Hall and may even improve on his 2021 victory when he won by 4.7%.

So far in the 2024 local elections, the Tories have lost more than 500 seats while Labour, the Lib Dems, Greens and independents have celebrated historic victories.

Key mayoral elections in Liverpool, Manchester, South Yorkshire and West Yorkshire have been won by Labour today.

The West Midlands, where Tory mayor Andy Street is fighting to stay in office, is expected to be a close-run contest, however.

Yesterday, Labour won three new mayoral elections in England, including in York and North Yorkshire – an area which includes Rishi Sunak’s constituency – the East Midlands and the North East.

Tory Mayor Ben Houchen clung on in Tees Valley for a third term while the Lib Dems won more seats than the Tories, including Tunbridge Wells and Devon. And the Green Party continued its forward march, notably taking its target council of Bristol from Labour.
