The bosses of a landfill in Fleetwood, the centre of months of smell complaints, are linked to another nuisance site in Yorkshire.

Transwaste, the owners of the Fleetwood landfill site on Jameson Road have been the centre of complaints for months, as residents say a ’sulphur-like’ pong has been affecting their every day lives.

Although permits are held by separate companies, records seen by LancsLive show that individuals involved in Transwaste are also linked to Caird Peckfield Ltd, the operators of another nuisance site.

Caird operate Peckfield Landfill Site in Micklefield, Leeds which has also been the centre of complaints in the West Yorkshire city. On December 13, 2023, the Environment Agency (EA) served an enforcement notice after operators breached the terms of their permit.

According to the government body, this included action to improve the gas collection infrastructure on site. As the enforcement notice was then not complied with, the EA are now considering further enforcement action in line with their sanctions and enforcement policy.

Work to complete the capping of the problem site is ongoing. Over in Fleetwood, Transwaste were served an enforcement notice on April 9, to bring the site back in compliance with its permit.

This includes covering the problem site by May 15. EA adds six additional gas wells have been installed to increase the capture of landfill gas from decomposing waste, helping to reduce emissions causing odour and according to EA, this was completed on Thursday, March 28.

An Environment Agency spokesperson said: "There are ongoing investigations into the causes of odour issues at both Peckfield landfill, which is operated by Caird Peckfield Ltd, and Jameson Road landfill, which is operated by Transwaste Ltd.

"We have increased regulatory inspections at both sites and continue to monitor odours in each community. Enforcement notices have been served which require both operators to take action to improve odours emanating from the sites and bring them back into compliance with their environmental permits.

"We understand how unpleasant odour issues are and the impact they have on communities and we are committed to securing improvements for local residents and the environment."

Transwaste did not respond to LancsLive’s request for comment.

In Fleetwood, further meetings have been held between the firm and local officials. At the beginning of April, environment bosses said risk to human health ’cannot be completely excluded’.

Locals say the "sulphur-like" stench has been affecting their everyday lives. Many have been reluctant to even leave their homes due to the pong. Some say they have been experiencing headaches and even nosebleeds as a result of the whiff.

In an update on April 8, the Environment Agency stated they’ve received 1,379 complaints from residents in March and 403 for April so far. The Agency have also stated the smell falls into two categories, one a ’bin waste’ odour and the other a ’rotten egg’ odour associated with landfill gas.
