A group of fans of South Shields FC were injured and rushed to hospital when their coach overturned on the A1 near Darrington on its way home from an away defeat

Seventeen people were rushed to hospital after a bus full of football fans was involved in a serious crash.

Fans of South Shields FC were travelling home when the minibus overturned on the A1 near Darrington, Yorkshire on Saturday. Yorkshire Ambulance Service initially declared a major incident, which was later stood down. So far no fatalities have been reported. 

The crash happened at around 7pm West Yorkshire Police said. Passengers were rushed to hospitals across the region as the road was closed in both directions until 3am today.

The fans had been travelling home from a 3-2 defeat against Tamworth in the Vanarama National League North. A video posted on social media, purportedly taken at the scene, showed a damaged minibus on its side on the hard shoulder of the carriageway. 

South Shields FC posted on their Facebook page: "Our thoughts go out to the supporters involved in a crash on the way home from today’s game. At this moment of time we have no further details, however we hope everyone is safe and recovering."

Police said: "Inquiries into the circumstances regarding the collision remain ongoing with officers from the roads policing unit.
"Anyone with information including dashcam footage relating to the collision or the unidentified white car, who has not yet spoken to the police, is asked to contact the roads policing unit via the livechat function on the website.

Several football clubs passed on their own good wishes. Opponents Tamworth said: "We are so sorry to hear about the accident. Our sincere thoughts are with everyone involved and trust everybody makes a full recovery."

Worthing posted: "We are so sorry to hear this. Sending our best wishes to everyone involved and hope everyone will be okay." Scarborough Athletic added: "We are so sorry to hear this. Sending our best wishes to everyone involved."
