A wealthy male tourist has been attacked by a shark in the Maldives with medics reportedly battling to save his leg.

The man, who is believed to be Russian, was swimming in Noonu Atoll when he was bitten by the shark that “almost bit off” his leg. The victim is shown in pictures in hospital where he underwent surgery, reported REN TV.

He was staying at the 5-star Mӧvenpick Hotel, which has insisted it was unaware of a shark attack involving one of its guests on its property. The hotel’s rooms start at £700 a night. “We have not received any reports of a shark attack on a person,” said a hotel spokesperson.

“The visitor was happily splashing in the azure ocean near Nunu Atoll,” reported Telegram channel 112. “The predator attacked suddenly and bit into the leg of the holidaymaker. The man was seriously injured and required surgery ahead of a long period of recovery.”

Pictures which hide the face of the unnamed tourist appear to show wounds to a leg and foot, and posts on social media say the tourist was Russian, but these have not been confirmed by news websites.

Russian diplomat German Fyodorov also said the embassy covering the Maldives - based in Sri Lanka - was unaware of any incident involving one of its citizens and a shark. The “shark attack” was reported by REN TV, 112 and Izvestia, all media outlets controlled by Russian dictator Vladimir Putin ’s lover Alena Kabaeva, 40, who heads the National Media Group.

Last month, a 13-year-old girl was bitten by a shark off Bargara Beach in Queensland, Australia. Paramedics were called to the scene at 4pm on March 15, where the girl was found with injuries to her back, legs and stomach, it was reported.

She was taken to the premises of a nearby surfing club to stop further bleeding and quickly rushed to hospital, where she received further treatment. The girl was said to be "calm" and in a stable condition, and the attack was understood not to be life threatening. Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) operations supervisor, Matthew Davenport, told local reporters she is "very lucky" not to have sustained more serious injuries. The beach, which is around 250 miles north of Brisbane, is not a known shark hotspot, he added.
